Interpersonal connection is a critical facet of human society. Relationships allow people to create community and culture as well as function as part of a family, group, or organization. In traditional work models, social capital is a natural part of the working environment. Employees who see each other daily have casual interactions that develop into deeper connections. Social engagement is essential

Social capital used to be a natural byproduct of regular, in-person interaction. Today’s more dispersed society is transforming the process of building social capital into one requiring forethought, planning, and intentional action. It’s not easy to make small talk in a virtual workplace, and small talk is frequently the foundation on which trust, empathy, and feelings of belonging rely.

Flexible working models offer extraordinary benefits for both employers and employees, but building social capital remains a challenge and an imperative. Consider the following data:

  • Only 58% of hybrid employees report thriving relationships with their direct teams, and only 48% report strong workplace relationships outside of their teams.

  • More than half of remote and hybrid employees report feelings of loneliness since their shift to virtual or distributed work.

  • Nearly half — 48% — of employees would prefer to spend more time networking and less time on office duties, such as responding to emails.

  • 62% of leaders express concern about new hires receiving the support they need since the shift to virtual work, and their concerns are valid. Employees hired during the pandemic are at higher risk for attrition.

  • Aside from salary, job seekers consider a positive work culture the most essential factor in their decision to accept a position.

Social capital strategies for a distributed workforce

Leading a distributed workforce requires a fresh perspective on social engagement and workplace relationships. Think about strategies for connecting — or reconnecting — employees both in and out of the office. Key areas for consideration include: 

  • Making social engagement a workplace priority. Work dynamics have changed in ways most organizations never predicted. Design clear strategies for employee engagement with a focus on allowing workers the time and energy to connect with one another. Engagement can happen in small ways, including casual but regular check-ins, and still provide employees the opportunity to develop social capital.

  • Create intentional opportunities for connection. Employees hired during the pandemic may never meet their co-workers in person. Retaining these employees poses an unfamiliar challenge because employers can’t rely on incidental encounters to help them engage with colleagues and invest in company culture. In a virtual or distributed workforce, connection must be proactively and intentionally planned. Examples include daily meetings, mentoring programs, interdepartmental events, and discussion groups. Assign new employees a virtual workplace mentor to help them adjust to their new position and acclimate to connecting from a distance.

  • Make authentic connection part of your company culture. Set the tone at the top with engaged leaders invested in providing employees the resources and platforms they need to engage, connect, listen, and be heard. Encourage employees to create their own support networks, seek connections beyond their immediate teams, and make time for informal interactions with their co-workers.

Social capital and genuine interpersonal connection contribute to a people-centered company culture. Employee engagement strategies encourage staff alignment and provide employees with opportunities for creating human connection, strong working relationships, and a support network that transcends the constraints of a virtual or distributed workplace.
